The Bitcoin miner manufacturer just released its latest model — the Avalon Miner A15 air cooling series miner A1566.

The Avalon miner, A1566, made its debut at the Hong Kong Bitcoin Asia 2024 summit last month on the 9th of May. The official specifications are as follows — 185 TH/s hash rate, power consumption of 3420 W, and an energy efficiency ratio of 18.5 J/TH.
The following is our independent review of the Avalon A1566.

First up, packaging. The Avalon Miner A1566 has a two layer outer packaging to provide sufficient protection during transportation and to support logistics. Any slight damage to the outer protective layer will not affect its interior. This outer packaging measures 405mm x 300mm x 410mm, weighing 17.3 kilograms. There is a hole on one side of the box so you can conveniently view the label on the inner box.

Image 02 shows the inner box that looks similar to the outer one pictured in Image 01, with the Canaan brand logo, product label, as well as packaging and shipping diagram symbols printed on the box.

Upon opening the box, the Avalon Miner A1566 host is extensively wrapped — with a two section cotton packaging and comes with a power cord. The label inside indicates no power cord, while the outer box shows the inclusion of a power cord. Any discrepancies in the labels is likely due to testing.

The host comes with a dust proof bag and a pack of desiccant, both packaged together with the host in a clear bag.

The body of the Avalon miner A1566 is square in shape and has clear and clean edges. The hash board, host, and power supply are fully integrated into one compact shape. The dimensions of the body are 297mmx193mmx292mm, and weighs 15.3 kilograms.

The Avalon miner A1566 comes sealed with warranty stickers on both the front and back.
The miner is furnished with two cooling fans. Three hash boards are installed on the exhaust side. Avalon’s signature honeycomb-shaped perforated structure is featured on the rear panel.

A “server” label that further clarifies the model name — Avalon miner A1566 — is affixed on one side of the miner. There is no specification of hash rate value. The label for power supply is on the opposite side of the miner.

The metal work and workmanship on the Avalon miner A1566 is exceptional. The casing has a soft touch, giving a comfortable tactile sensation. No rough edges can be felt whe running your hands over the surface.

The accompanying power cord has a standard 16A plug, and a wire diameter measuring 3×2.5mm² and 1.5 meters in length.

The front panel consists of the following from left to right: status indicator light (green when operating normally), Ethernet port, reset button, FUNC function button, and fan power interface.

The power supply comes with a separate switch, model number PSU3500–01, and has a maximum output power of 4100W (11.5–15V). It is supplied by Shenzhen Dian San Yuan. The power cord and interface is designed to prevent misinsertion. With its locking structure, it effectively avoids the risk of wire detachment caused by accidental collisions.

The Avalon miner A1566 is fitted out with two high pressure cooling fans with specifications of 12050. The 6-line fan interface is located on the outer panel, making it convenient and efficient for fan replacement when needed.

Once your power cord is connected and the Ethernet cable is plugged in, the miner is all set for the user to start their Bitcoin mining process. After testing, it is concluded that its ambient temperature is at 25.5 degrees Celsius, and the ambient noise is approximately 50 decibels.

After powering up the miner, you can search for the IP address of the host “Avalon” by accessing the DHCP client list on your local router. Following that, enter the IP address on your browser to access the miner control page.

The login username and password for the Avalon miner A1566 are both “root”.

At the Configuration page, you can modify the mining pool address and worker number according to your needs.

Go to the Network section to modify the miner’s IP address according to your requirements for future maintenance. After all modifications are completed, it is necessary to restart the miner.

Once the configuration is correct, the miner’s indicator light will turn green, and the parameters on page will show up green as well. At this point, the miner will start computing.

The miner can reach the official listed hash rate of 185 Th/s after running for about 8 minutes.

After running for approximately 20 minutes, the hash rate of the miner reaches its peak at 192 Th/s.

After a full day of testing, the following data was derived for the Avalon miner: the inlet temperature is 25 degrees Celsius, the outlet temperature is 60 degrees Celsius, resulting in a temperature difference of 35 degrees Celsius. The ambient noise level is 78.5 decibels. The control page indicates that the overall hash rate has remained stable at 190T, with a total power consumption of 3458W.

The average hash rate received by the Binance mining pool over 24 hours is 189T.

After continuous observation of the miner under operation, we can conclude that the Avalon Miner A1566 runs smoothly. The control page shows minimal fluctuations in hash rate. When the ambient temperature rises, the outlet temperature remains around 60 degrees Celsius. Only the fan speed fluctuates between 4000–5000 rpm, and the noise level is well controlled with minimal fluctuations, reaching a peak of nearly 80 decibels. The overall power consumption fluctuates within a small range of about 10W.
Taking into consideration the total power consumption of 3458W and the overall hash rate of 189T, the energy efficiency ratio of the Avalon Miner A1566 is calculated at 18.3W/T. This reflects the value listed.
The test is concluded.
